Joyce Boone just might be the toughest grandmother in the tri-state region.

She competes far from the spotlight—in bars and basements, at street fairs and middle schools. In the chalk-caked, sweat-soaked world of women’s arm wrestling, Boone, a 44-year-old home health-care aide, has secured her place as the best in New York.

Her recent triumphs include a win over a Canadian national champion at the Port Authority Bus Terminal and an appearance in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.” Next up: a trip to Mulcahy’s Pub in Brookhaven, N.Y., for the Long Island Arm Wrestling Championships on July 31.
